Proyecto Akwid
Background:
Akwid is a Los Angeles based hip hop group blending hip hop-style
vocals with regional Mexican music. Consisting of rapper brothers
Sergio “AK” Gomez and Francisco “Wikid” Gomez,
the group gained a Latin Grammy nomination as well as a double platinum
record with their 2003 debut, “Proyecto Akwid.” After their
previous label Univision Records folded in 2008, the Latin hip hop
sensation recorded under Universal's Machete Music. Their upcoming
album, “Revolver,” is set to be released in July of 2012.
Mexican Immigrants
Childhood and Family:
The Gomez brothers Sergio and Francisco were born in Jiquilpan,
Michoacán, México. They relocated to the United States
when they were young and settled in Los Angeles. While growing up on
the street of South Central Los Angeles, they found a great interest in
hip hop and tried to blend that sound with elements of traditional
Mexican music. It was not long before Akwid was born.
Juvenile Style
Career:
As a teenager, Sergio Gomez and Francisco Gomez formed the Juvenile
Style DJ crew and they respectively took the monikers
“Wikid” and “AK.” They decided to combine the
hip hop style vocals with regional Mexican music and formed the group
Akwid.
In June 2003, Akwid released their first studio album, “Proyecto
Akwid,” on the Univision Records label. Featuring Jenni Rivera
and Adan “Chalino” Sanchez, the album had gone double
platinum (sold over 200,000 copies in the Latin market) and
received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock/Alternative
Album as well as two Billboard Prizes. A single titled “No Hay
Manera” (“There's No Way”) had a strong position at
the Latin music charts.
Akwid went on to release four more studio albums under Univision before
the label closed in 2008. They are “KOMP 104.9 Radio Compa”
(2004), “Los Aguacates de Jiquilpan” (2005), “
E.S.L.” (2006) and “La Novela” (2007). The group also
released compilations albums: “Crossover” (2004),
“Hoy, Ayer, and Forever” (2004) and “Siempre”
(2004) (all under 2-k Sounds) as well as “Kickin' It
Juntos” (with Jae-P, (2005), “Still Kickin' It” (with
Jae-P, 2005), “Live in Japan” (2006), “Dos En
Uno” (2006), “Greatest Exitos” (2007) and “No
Hay Manera y Muchos Exitos Mas: Linea de Oro” (2007) (all via
Univision).
Akwid is now signed with Universal's Machete Music. The group's first
album with the label, “Clasificado 'R',” was released in
2010. The group's new album, “Revolver,” will be
released in July 2012.
