"I have come to accept that if I have a new haircut it is front page news. But
having a picture of my foot on the front page of a national newspaper is a bit
exceptional." David Beckham
Madrid midfielder (number 23 shirt) and English national team captain David
Beckham is widely known for his crossings, long-range free kicks and corner
hits. England's football (soccer) superstar, who received the nicknames Dave,
Becks, and Golden Balls, spent most of his football career at the English club
Manchester United (number 7 shirt, 1993 to 2003). In addition to his popularity
as a talented soccer player, 5' 11 inches tall Beckham, who has light brown hair
and dark blue eyes, also became a trendsetter for his hairstyles and clothes. He
is the only British sports star to be listed in People magazine's annual 50 Most
Beautiful People poll.
"During the past few months, I have become accustomed to reading more and more
ludicrous stories about my private life. The simple truth is that I am very
happily married, have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is
nothing that any third party can do to change these facts." David Beckham
Beckham's private life and bad temper has made headlines several times. The
husband of British singer Victoria "Posh" Adams (former member of Spice Girls)
frequently raises public eyebrows with rumors of affairs. Some of the rumors
linked him to his former personal assistant Rebecca Loos and Malaysian-born
Australian model Sarah Marbeck. Recently, Beckham and Victoria sued their former
nanny Abbie Gibson after she revealed to the media that she witnessed the couple
fighting on numerous occasions. Later, after a court hearing in London in April
2005, the former nanny finally agreed not to reveal any more private information
about the celebrity couple's marriage. After all the extensive rumors harassing
his family, Beckham, who currently lives between Hertfordshire and Madrid, is
now rumored to be leaving Madrid to return to England in order to save his
family.
Owner of two soccer schools, one in London and Los Angeles, Beckham reportedly
planned to establish an Asian version of the David Beckham Academy by 2007. He
will also soon branch out into acting and star in the documentary drama Real:
The Movie and will have a cameo appearance in Goal.

Leytonstone, London, England, UK. The second child of David Edward Beckham
(married in 1969) and Sandra West, David has two sisters, Joanne (born in 1982)

"I like Victoria for herself, not for nothing else. I'd like her if she worked
in Tesco... People can say what they like. But me and Victoria will always stay
together as husband and wife." David Beckham.
In January 1998, Beckham became engaged to Victoria Beckham Adams (former member
of the Pop group Spice Girls; born on April 17, 1975) and exchanged wedding vows
on July 4, 1999. The couple now has three sons: Cruz Beckham (born on February
20, 2005), Romeo James (born on September 1, 2002), and Brooklyn Joseph Beckham
(born on March 4, 1999).

Career:
"I dream a lot about football and a lot of them have come true for me." David
Beckham
Five years after winning the Bobby Charlton Soccer Skills Award at the age of
11, David Beckham was discovered by Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton
and was signed as a trainee at United's Youth. He became Andrei Kanchelskis'
substitute player at his debut game against Brighton in July 1992. His first
honor came when United's Youth won the FA Youth Cup in that same year and
Beckham scored a deal as a professional United squad member in the next year.
Beckham first played in the Champions League game at age 18, in which he
presented a goal to the team's final win. He began his full performance in April
1995 and made his first goal in the Premiership match of the 1995-1996 season
against Aston Villa. He also created the winning goal in the semi-final of the
FA Cup at Villa Park against Chelsea, making United finish the "double" in that
season.
In the 1996-1997 seasons, Beckham became a regular as a right midfielder. His
quality in crossings, free kicks and long shots became a great advantage for his
club and helped catapult his name towards the spotlight. He was best remembered
for his 60-yard lob over Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, from inside his own
half, in the opening league game of the season. Glen Hoddle subsequently called
him up to his first full England team, which he debuted with in an international
match against Moldova. His bright performance gave him several awards, including
Sky Sports/Panasonic Young Player of Year, the Sir Matt Busby Award and PFA
Young Player of the Year.
In the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckham made his first international goal with
an incredible free kick against Columbia in England's final match. As for his
personal achievement, Beckham received his forth Premiership winner's medal and
won a Champions League title, and an Intercontinental Cup and an English league
title in the same year. In 1999, he won another F.A. Cup, was the runner-up at
the European Ballon d'Or awards and became FIFA's World Player of the Year, as
well as the runner-up in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He also
released David Beckham: My Story, the United Manchester midfielder's
autobiography in 1998.
After winning the Premiership title with United in 2000, in which he contributed
goals in three consecutive matches, Beckham was appointed to the coveted
position of captain of the England team. At the World Cup 2002 in Korea/Japan,
Beckham did a penalty kick that gave England the victory over Argentina, which
allowed English fans to forgive the red card he received four years earlier.
However, a toe bone injury he received while playing in a Champions League match
reduced his performance in the quarterfinals and England was eventually defeated
by Brazil.
"To experience playing and being in the same team as these players is something
that might not ever happen again - to have so many players in one team. I just
wanted to be one of these stars and play in this team." David Beckham (on Real
Madrid).
Following his victory with United in the 2003 Premiership, the press spread the
rumors about his transfer to clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, the latter of
which was reported to pay a transfer fee of $41 million for Beckham. He
eventually ended the speculation by announcing his four-year contract with Real
Madrid. Since then, Beckham has teamed up with such soccer stars as Zinedine
Zidane, Luis Figo, and Ronaldo.
This green yard heartthrob is also known as a celebrity. His frequently changing
hairstyles and clothes have become trendsetters around the globe. He has modeled
for such products as Adidas, Police Sunglasses, Castrol, Marks and Spencer,
Pepsi, Vodafone, and recently signed a three-year contact to promote Gillette
razors and blades.
In the summer of 2003, Beckham was awarded an OBE (Order Of British Empire
Honor) in Queen Elizabeth II's honors list. In that same year, his name was used
as the title in the sleeper hit Bend It Like Beckham. Soon, he will star in a
documentary drama film about Real Madrid, Real: The Movie, along with the club's
superstars Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Raul. The film is scheduled to premiere
this summer to tie in with the Spanish team's worldwide tour. Another upcoming
film project is Goal, in which Beckham will have a cameo appearance. The film is
about an L.A. kid who signs with Newcastle United and will be under Mel Gibson's
Icon Productions.
"Hollywood, no. I am a soccer player at the moment." David Beckham
