Donny Osmond was one of the quintessential teen idols of the '70s, with
perhaps the longest run on the covers of the teen magazines of any idol.
Donny began performing regularly at the tender age of six with his family's
singing group, The Osmond Brothers. Originally, they were a barbershop
quartet-style act, and got national exposure on television shows like
"Disneyland After Dark" and "The Andy William Show."
Around the time Donny turned twelve, things began to change radically for both
Donny and his brothers' group. After observing the success of the pop group the
Jackson Five, The Osmond Brothers changed their direction to appeal to what had
been labeld the bubblegum market.
The Osmonds began to appear in the teen magazines in early 1970, and by the end
of that year, they were genuine superstars with their single "One Bad Apple"
hitting #1 on the pop charts in February of 1971. The teen magazines quickly
began to focus on cute, loveable Donny, making him a sensation on his own. Donny
began recording solo albums and serving as the centerpiece for the Osmond
Brothers band.
As the Osmond Brothers began to wane in popularity, Donny as able to stay in the
limelight when he partnered with his sister, Marie, for a series of albums and a
popular TV variety show which ran for three seasons beginning in 1976.
WHERE IS HE NOW?
Donny had a big comeback in the late 1980s beginning with his hit single
"Soldier of Love." In the late 1990s, Donny performed in a lengthy run in
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and released an autobiography in
1999. Donny reunited with his sister, Marie for a day-time talk show called
"Donny & Marie," which ran from fall of 1998 through fall of 2000. His new CD,
Somewhere In Time is available on Decca records.
