Vicious, Ludwig and Dracula
"I don't think Hollywood knows what to do with me. I would imagine that when it comes to romantic comedies, my name would be pretty low down on the list," Gary Oldman.
British actor Gary Oldman began his worldwide popularity portraying punk rocker Sid Vicious in the film Sid and Nancy (1986). Later he distinguished himself with memorable starring roles as Dracula in Dracula, Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears, and Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK. Oldman was more recently seen playing the villain Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies. Behind the camera, Oldman was the director and producer of the well-received film Nil By Mouth (1997).
Oldman, who once tied the knot with actresses Uma Thurman and Lesley Manville, was also once engaged to Immortal Beloved's (1994) playmate Isabella Rossellini (born on June 18, 1952) and from 1997 to 2001 was married to Donya Fiorentino. Recently he was rumored to be sweet on model and actress Ailsa Marshall.
Auburn-haired Oldman recently worked with other artists on the children's CD, A World of Happiness, in order to raise funds for charity.
Childhood and Family:
"There's an uncanny thing that chemically happens to you when you're in the chronic stages of alcoholic drinking. I have been able, on occasions, to have two bottles of vodka and still be up talking to people. That got very frightening. By nature I'm an isolationalist, so my boozing was at home, thank you. I was not a goer-outer. I mean, I didn't drink for the taste and I didn't want to be social. Someone once described alcoholics as egomaniacs with low self-esteem. Perfect definition," Gary Oldman.
Leonard Gary Oldman, born on 21st of March 1958, is the son of Irish mother Kathleen, and father Len (died of alcoholism in 1984) who left the family when Gary was 7 years old. Just like his father, this London, England native later turned alcoholic and had to attend rehabilitation for therapy.
The younger brother of actress Laila Morse (born on August 1, 1945), Gary was first rejected when he wanted to attend London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. However, he then gained a scholarship for the Rose Bruford Drama College in Kent, England and graduated in 1979.
Gary married three times; the first was to actress Lesley Manville (born on March 12, 1956), which ended in 1990 and produced son Alfred Oldman (born in 1988). In the same year, he married actress Uma Thurman and then divorced in 1992. On 16 February 16, 1997 Gary tied the knot with photographer Donya Fiorentino and has two sons, Gulliver Flynn Oldman (born in August 1997) and Charlie John, as well as a stepdaughter named Phelix Imogen Fincher (born in April 1994).
Harry Potter's Worst Enemy
"Change is vital to any actor. If you keep playing lead after lead, you're really gonna dry up because all those vehicles wean you away from the truths of human behavior," Gary Oldman.
Performing on stage in the late 70s, Gary Oldman joined the Greenwich Young People's Theatre and won awards for his performance in the hit 80's play, The Pope's Wedding. It earned him his first silver screen appearance in Remembrance (1982), followed with Mike Leigh's TV Meantime (1983).
The role of Sex Pistol member Sid Vicious in Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy (1986) helped Oldman catapult his name before the public. Subsequently, Oldman portrayed gay writer Joe Orton on Stephen Frears' Prick up Your Ears (1987).
Oldman's roles continued to prosper with such notable lead roles as Lee Harvey Oswald in Oliver Stone's JFK (1991), the title role in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), and as Beethoven in Immortal Beloved (1994). He is also credited to films like True Romance (1993), Romeo Is Bleeding (1993), Murder In The First (1995), and The Scarlet Letter (1995, costarring Demi Moore). His work in Basquiat (1996), The Fifth Element (1997), Air Force One (1997), and Lost In Space (1998) are also included in his acting resume.
In 1985, along with Douglas Urbanski, Oldman established the production company SE8 Group, which debuted with the prize winning Nil By Mouth (1997), a film that he wrote, directed and produced. The company was involved in Plunkett & Macleane (1999), Nobody's Baby (2001, starring Gary Oldman), and Joe Buck, which was written and directed by Oldman.
After portraying Mason Verger in Ridley Scott's Hannibal (2001), Oldman scored another important role, as the possible murderer of Harry Potter's parents, Sirius Black, in the sequels Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). On his role in the Harry Potter films he said, "I've done so much R-rated work, it's nice to have a job you can show your kids."
Additionally, Oldman will be seen as character Lt. James Gordon in the forthcoming Batman Begins in 2005.
