 | This is an excellent mainstream police detective film. One of its purposes was to help prevent Harrison Ford from being typecast in the action/adventure films of Lucas and Spielberg. An Amish boy witnesses a murder in a public restroom in Philadelphia. It becomes Ford's job to protect the boy and his mother so that the boy can later testify as a witness. Ford goes back to the Amish community of the mother and child, where he encounters many cultural differences between their ways and those of urban American society. The movie is fairly slow moving, but filled with humorous moments, before the criminals arrive for the final showdown. In this respect, the film is much like a western in which the good guys wait in town until the bad guys show up for the ultimate gun fight. The film won Oscars for best original screenplay and best film editing. It was nominated for best actor in a leading role (Ford), best art direction and set decoration, best cinematography, best musical score, best director, and best picture.
