SummaryBad Weather... Good Effects
Content
From most reviews of the disaster flick THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, it is difficult to tell the merits of the film. Rather, you'll read plenty of reviews about the polarizing politics of the subject matter. I consider the film way to silly to be neither "Bad Science" nor "a wake-up call", so will talk about the "movie part" rather than the "political part".

At its core, the film suggests what happens when the earth's climate goes through a massive change. Specifically, it shows global warming as the catalyst for a new ice-age. Mother Nature altering the earth to reflect her will at everyone else's expense.

Whether it be hollowed out glaciers, tornadoes devastating downtown Los Angeles or a tidal surge drowning out New York City, that is when the film succeeds. The effects are clever and unrelenting. They even offer an artisanship that has been difficult to attain with computer generated film-making. This devastation is certainly a powerful backdrop.

Caught up in all the weather phenomena is Dennis Quaid's character, Jack Hall. Not only is he the soul voice of reason, and one of the few people who understands what is happening, he is also is a father looking to repay his son for years of absenteeism. This dominating storyline quickly knocks the flick down a couple pegs. It is amazing that in the middle of a film that shows such extreme devastation, it is the `human' story that is most far-fetched.

Along the way are some subplots that fall flat. A suggested leg amputation and attacks by wild wolves will have you rolling your eyes.

Like previous Roland Emmerich's film INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, New York receives quite a beating. Unlike those films, the media made the mistake of taking THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW too seriously. And as serious material, it is nothing short of ridiculous. But as a nod to disaster films of the 70s, it borders on good fun.

The DVD has a great widescreen image and sounded great using the optional DTS sound mix.

SummaryAtrocious... silliest movie since 'Armageddon'
Content
This one is so politically correct they even recycled the plot. If the director had spent as much time developing the story as he did on the special effects, it might have been worth more than one star. As it is, I'd have given it zero, but that's not an option here.

I haven't laughed so much at a disaster flick since "Armageddon".

SummaryBeautiful Score, but over-the-top story
Content
Okay, we've all heard about global warming by now, but this movie seriously blows it way out of proportion. Realistically, ice ages take place over the course of several thousand years of gradual climate shifts, not in what? 9 days? Please... This film will likely be seen as a great heralding warning to humanity by the enviromental kooks, a warning of a threat that is not at all even existant. But if you check REAL science at the door and put on your pseudo-scientific eyeglasses, the movie is good fun, and what a resemblance that vice president has to VP Cheney--gee golly whiz-I wonder what THAT was implying? These evil Bambi-killing conservatives--we're all out to get you! Anyhow, the real save for this movie is the majestic score. Herald Kloser never fails to blow me away with his compositions. My advice is to buy the soundtrack, rent the movie.

Summarypolitically correct hallucination

What a left wing crock!! The third world to the rescue, lmao! Hell, all the aid we give to Mexico and their illegals, the least they could do would be to let us stay in their warm cesspool for a couple weeks to ride out the freezing storm. I bet this was a favorite for Kerry voters

SummaryCheck your brain at the door
Content
Great special effects save this from the dreaded 1 star rating but special effects alone do not constitute a movie.

Everything is half-baked in The Day After Tomorrow. Tired and predictable plot and script, stereotyped characters, laughable science and politics... The movie is so sure we will be unable to understand it's so obvious message that it is neatly summarized for us at the end.

I would avoid this turkey.
