 | I would recommend this movie, especially to any Sci-Fi fans. But it has something for everyone. Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges are great in their roles. John Carpenter may be known for his horror movies, but he does well in this genre as well. The movie does go over the top with the usual government and military desire to destroy aliens. But most Sci-Fi movies do, don't they? |

 | This movie has the distinction of being the only John Carpenter film to earn an Oscar nomination. STARMAN is a wonderfully enjoyable movie with Jeff Bridges garnering a Best Actor nomination for his role as the starman, who gets stranded on earth and takes on the form of a young woman's dead husband. Karen Allen, in her best role, is the widow and she is a perfect match for Bridges' genial alien. Bridges is a delight to watch as he takes on the mannerisms of a human being; his naivete, innocence and pure goodness radiates the film. Allen's conflict in how she feels about this alien is also beautifully played out, and by the time the movie comes to its inevitable conclusion, we've been given a rather unique love story to boot. Charles Martin Smith is good as the government employee who has to battle the war mongering Richard Jaeckel to ensure Bridges' safety. Bridges scene with the killed deer is also touching. The movie is like a grown up version of ET, and while it wasn't nearly as successful, STARMAN is one of John Carpenter's finest films. |

 | I loved this movie as a kid, and I love this movie as an adult. I am now 28 years old. This movie really makes you think about the savageness of the human species. The movie made me think long and hard about two things: 1) is it moral to slaughter animals, especially those that do not threaten us? 2) is our modern society really as sophisticated as we think, or much more primitive than we'd like to believe? Good movies should make us think, and this one definitely does. |

 | Starman is easily the most accessible film John Carpenter has made yet. He shows surprising deftness in his handling of this sweet, touching movie. It's pretty amazing to think that a couple of years previous he was releasing the gore-fest, The Thing.
This alien being however is only interested in learning about our planet and maybe making it better. The deer scene is a classic, and the final image on screen before the fade out is marvelous. Karen Allen's expression sums up how many people feel after they see this fine film. A great movie? Bingo!
Now we need a release with extras including Carpenter's commentary. |
| Rating | | | Date | March 29, 2005 | | Summary | Gentle, thoughtful sci-fi | Content
 | This underrated sci-fi is a joy to watch. Karen Allen stars as Jenny Hayden, a young widow who wakes one night to find someone in her house who looks exactly like her dead husband Scott. Jeff Bridges plays an alien who is sent on an investigative mission after his people intercepted the Voyager probe, which was carrying details of earth and its inhabitants. In a naive attempt not to frighten Jenny, the alien takes on the form of Scott.
The alien has crash landed and has only 3 days to cross the USA to a rendezvous point where he will be rescued. A terrified Jenny is forced to drive the being and she initially is, naturally enough, very hostile. As their journey across the States progresses however, Jenny begins to learn more about this strange and gentle being and a burgeoning relationship develops. Meanwhile government agencies are in hot pursuit, their aim is to capture, interrogate and kill the alien.
This is a film that is gentle and moving but also manages to build up tension as the chase is on, and fine acting from all the leads adds to the quality. This film is great for anyone wanting something a little more thoughtful than the usual action packed, special effects filled type of movie in this genre.
