 | I've loved this movie from when I was very, very young and I still do. I know what a lot of people say, 'Oh they were just trying to do Grease again, it was horrible blah blah blah.' Can I just say, Oh please!
Basics of the movie:
God and His angels make a bet because God is having a little crisis of faith Himself--just in the human species. He's all "I'm going to flood the world because the people on earth are so horrible!" The angels are all "No, please don't. We'll prove to you the good in humans and how they love each other and how they'll sacrifice everything for another person." SO!...they make a bet. If the angels can prove it, the world doesn't flood. If they don't, everyone is going to drown and come to heaven so God can start all over. Make an omelette...
So, after settling on a time limit they look around and decide on John Travolta's character (who lives in NYC, which I think God was way too difficult on His angels for that one). John's got his own problems. He is running from loan sharks while he tries to finance his ideas for inventions. One of them include edible sunglasses. He's been in some trouble but nothing major. The loan sharks are on his back about the money he owes and so, dear Johnny decides to rob a bank. The bank which "dun dun dunnnn" Olivia Newton-John works at! After robbing the bank, she loses her job (and has her own bills to pay--back rent, loans and such) for "flirting" with the robber when she wasn't. Come to find out, Ms. Innocent (Olivia plays an actress from Austraila [Olivia always plays someone from Austraila doesn't she?]) had taken the money from the bank, put it in HER bag. John goes back to his apt, sees the bag of "money" is filled with reciepts and goes nuts. That's when the loan sharks come in and there's a nifty chase scene. Angels are allowed to intervene using the handy dandy words printed on a VCR (or BETA machine at the time) such as "Freeze it!" or "Rewind!" The Devil even shows up and tries to tempt the angels, stop the affair blossoming between John and Olivia's characters and also shows the loan sharks where John is hiding at Olivia's apt.
There's a big showdown at the end that's pretty sad (I almost cried) between John and a gunman.
If you like older movies or Olivia and John together, definitely get this movie. It's one of my favorites and I hope to have it on DVD soon.

 | I write this going way back when my dad brought me to the movies as an 11-year-old, a huge huge Olivia fan. But I came away with a mixed bag of feelings, not quite knowing what to make of it. I remember the sexual scenes, the language and all made me feel extremely uncomfortable, except for the last part where God forgave the sins of everybody, thereby trumping over Satan who wanted all destroyed.
Watching Olivia in a screen departure from her sweet image posed something of a big shock to a kid. That same month of 1984, I read the newspapers lambast "Two of a kind" as a sugar-coated poison pill. A movie not for children and to my friends out there, you wouldn't want to waste your time and money. After all these years, I wouldn't see it again. Love Olivia to bits but detest the show to pieces.

 | Well, I admit, hearing Olivia Newton-John swear for the first time made me uncomfortable, but aside from that, the movie was not terrible. Olivia is really a great actress! She and John Travolta really did well together in this film. This movie really has a great soundtrack, too. |

 | Oh my God! What was up with most people in the eighties? How could this have been a flop movie? And Xanadu!? I think this is a really good movie, i have had it not even a day, and i have watched it 5 and a half times and know most of the words! I love Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta together, i think they are brilliant, they work so well together. I reccomend this to any Olivia fan (and probably 2 john fans too!). It is funny, frightening (maybe not to grown ups but it was for me!), happy, sad, and Brando the cat is so cute!! (olivia's cat in the movie!) I laughed, cried (i hate seeing olivia cry!) and i hid behind the cushion! A great movie! OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN IS AMAZING!!!!!!! |
