 | SWORDFISH is always Slick and Glossy. Unfortuantely SWORFISH is also stilted and inane. This screenplay idea has been shot many times already and usually better. But, this version follows and borrows from THE MATRIX allowing for some impressive slow motion explosions. John Travolta, wearing a ridiculous make-up design that never looks natural, replays his villain from BROKEN ARROW and is shown up by the... ummm... physical performance by HALLE BERRY who brightens the scenes with her 'tonality'. HUGH JACKMAN plays a bland everyman that also gets lost behind Halle Berry's "Charms." The DVDoffers far more than the flick deserves including alternate endings and a couple documentaries. But, its the video and audio transfer that will shake your home entertainment system. |

 | Well, if you want to see Hale Berry (...), watch this! It's a brief and pointless scene. If you want to see John Travolta drive a frickin' sweet car, watch this! If you want to see some cool and memorable visuals and scenes, watch this!
But besides that, this movie was bad. The movie was just plain weird, confusing and...weird! But, the director was smart, show Hale Berry (...) and you'll get some men to go see it and maybe even buy it! Oh, and what's that? Add an awesome car that I want to buy even though I can't, well that's cool. By the way, the car is a Tuscan and it's sweet. But, if you want to check out that car, buy Project Gotham Racing 1 or 2 and you can drive it or buy it if you're RICH! Oh, and if you want to chexk out Hale Berry, I think that Monster's Ball shows some stuff but I never saw it! So, just stay away from this movie! |

 | Early in the film, Travolta's character gives this little speech:
"You know what the problem with Hollywood is? They make sh*t. Unbelievable, unremarkable sh*t...I'm talking about the lack of realism. Realism. Not a pervasive element in today's modern American cinematic vision."
After watching the additional material at the end of the movie it became perfectly clear that my assessment of the movie while watching it ('what a waste of celluloid') was on the money. The producer, commenting on the escape scene at the end, noted that they were trying to do something that no one else had done before in an ending.
Wait 'til you see it. How in God's name would criminals escape like that? Realism? Spare me. It makes for some fancy special effects (that are just a bit too reminiscent of The Matrix) but it's ridiculous, so ridiculous as to not even be entertaining.
Perhaps the best thing about the movie was its premise. But once the film starts rolling, it just meanders about seeking to shock the viewer with fancy stunts and dialogue. And its attempt to 'better' Dog Day Afternoon was a laugh.
It's too high on its own sense of the spectacular and lacks substance. Travolta never quit gives the impression that he is as cool as he looks. Jackman's relationship with his daughter seems a bit contrived and Berry's role is pretty much as a prop. Don Cheadle is probably the best of the four on the box cover but the movie is a bit too puffed up on its own looks.
We never care about any of the characters, not even the hostages. The special effects have all been done before and are basically pointless, kind of like kids breaking things to get some attention. Obviously, I was really disappointed. I can't say it's a waste of time but there are better ways to spend two hours.
There is one redeeming feature about this film: the soundtrack. That, and you get to see Halle Berry naked.

 | SWORDFISH is mediocre in every way. It was a tragic waste of some talented actors. Sadly, there are only two reasons to see this movie. Those reasons came with a very well-publicized price-tag, but by themselves, they do not make this movie somehow magically transform into something worth watching. |

 | Someone below noted the cardboard characters--too true. You'll never find a finer example of this than in this dreck. This film is a ludicrous waste of time from top to bottom, from every actor in it to (most especially) any unlucky viewers.
Jackman actually puts in a pretty good performance, considering what crapola he is forced to work with. The rest of the cast, led by Travolta, phones it in.This is probably the worst Travolta performance in his career, and that's saying something. He seems thoroughly bored with the script, and I certainly can't blame him.
This is a candidate for worst major release film ever made.It may not be the worst ever, but I can't think of any more insulting.I felt dirty after viewing it. |
