Bad Boy of Lost

Background:

An American actor and former fashion model of Dutch and Scottish lineage, Josh Holloway enjoyed a successful career in the world of modeling, which took him all over North America and Europe, before launching an acting career in Los Angeles. Making his debut in an episode of “Angel” (1999), the handsome performer continued to land other episodic roles in television series like “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service” and “Good Girls Don't....” as well as pick up supporting roles in many independent films, including “Cold Heart” (2001), “Moving August” (2002) and “Mi amigo (2002).”

First notice for his leading role in Sci-Fi Channel's movie “Sabretooth” (2002), Holloway's hard work paid off in 2004 when he was cast in his star-making role as James “Sawyer” Ford on the ABC Emmy award-winning series “Lost” (2004-present). For his bright acting, he took home a Screen Actors Guild Award, sharing with other cast mates, a Saturn nomination and two Teen Choice nominations. Referring to his character, he stated, “I get the script, and I'm like, 'Oh, no, he's even worse. Oh, no.' You want him to be better, right? I want him to be redeemed, and it's just not the nature of the character.” He added, “He cons women and preys on them, and he's very good at it. But on the island, he's fighting with his own humanity. He's faced with himself and doesn't like what he sees.”

More recently, in 2007, Holloway's fans can see him starring in the crime movie “Whisper.”

Off screen, Holloway is 6' 1½” tall and was named one of People magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” in 2005. In January 2006, he was chosen by In Touch Weekly as the “hottest hunk” on television. Later that same month, he was ranked No. 17 in the British OK! Magazine list of “The Sexiest Guy Worldwide.” In 2007, he was selected as the new face for Davidoff's “Cool Water” fragrance worldwide. Holloway is married to Yessica Kumala, his long time lover.

“If I were single? Damn, I'd have one girl doing my laundry, one shaving me, one bringing me a cocktail and another one coming out of my tent all hungover.” Josh Holloway

In the morning of October 12, 2005, Holloway and his wife were robbed at gunpoint in their home in Hawaii. The gun man awoke the couple in their bedroom and took away cash and credits card before droving away in Holloway's Mercedes-Benz, which was discovered abandoned a short time later. No evidence found that the criminals knew whom they were robbing, or Holloway had become a target since he was a celebrity.

In the summer of 2006, green-eyed Holloway made use of his celebrity status to support Just Yell Fire, a self-defense project aiming at tutoring teen girls techniques in order to defend themselves against felons and rapists.

Currently, Holloway divides his time between Los Angeles and Hawaii, where “Lost” is being filmed.

Blue Ridge Mountain Boy

Childhood and Family:

“We lived in a trailer and had eight dogs, two horses, cats, a cow, a chicken. My dad put the trailer up for sale because he wanted to build us a home, but the sale closed before he finished construction. So my dad said, 'Boys, we're camping!' My brothers and I loved it. Every weekend we went to chicken houses for lumber. My dad once told me he built our entire house for five grand.” Josh Holloway

Born in the California area that would become known as Silicon Valley on July 20, 1969, Joshua Lee Holloway, professionally known as Josh Holloway, moved with his family to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia when he was still a baby. His father was a surveyor and his mother worked as a nurse. Josh grew up in a trailer park, along with his four siblings: a sister and three brothers, and attended Free Home Elementary and Cherokee High School, in Canton, Georgia. As for college, he enrolled at the University of Georgia, but dropped out after only a year due to financial reasons. He has recently admitted that he stool thousands of dollars of merchandise with his friends from the store where they worked and claimed that he used the the profits from the scam to go through a semester in college. Josh developed an interest for films when he was three.

On October 1, 2004, Josh married his long time girlfriend Yessica Kumala in Kauai, Hawaii. His hobbies and interests include fishing, snow boarding, motor cross, sailing, camping, martial arts and playing guitar.

Career:

After leaving college, a self-considered Blue Ridge Mountain boy although he was born in northern California, Josh Holloway moved to New York to chase a career in modeling. His good looks soon attracted attentions that led him to travel all over North America and Europe. A movie-buff since the age of 3, Holloway was eager to try his hand in acting and then made his way to Los Angeles in an attempt to pursue the craft.

In 1999, Holloway received his acting break with an episodic part as Good Looking Guy on the first episode of the WB's series “Angel.” A film assignment followed two years later, when he was cast in the supporting role of Sean in the independent thriller “Cold Heart,” opposite Nastassja Kinski. He continued to play a smaller role in the indie-comedy “Moving August” (2002), starring Eddie McClintock and Sarah Wynter and directed by Christopher Fink. Still in 2002, he also teamed up with Ed Bruce and Tom Everett for Milton Brown's Western “Mi amigos” and had an uncredited part in “My Daughter's Tears.” However, it was Holloway's lead role as Trent Parks in the Sci-Fi Channel movie “Sabretooth” (2002) that won the model-turned-actor considerable notice. Among his costars in the movie were David Keith, Vanessa Angel, John Rhys-Davies and Jenna Gering.

Holloway took on a small role in Nolan Lebovitz' comedy “Dr. Benny” (2003) before returning to television as a guest performer in such series as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (2003), “Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service” (2004), “The Lyon's Den” (2004) and “Good Girls Don't...” (2004). It was in late 2004 that Holloway experienced a life-changing career when he landed the role of bad-boy James “Sawyer” Ford on the popular ABC drama “Lost” (2004-present). Starring opposite Naveen Andrews as Sayid Jarrah, Emilie de Ravin as Claire Littleton, Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard and Jorge Garcia as Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes, he jointly nabbed a 2006 Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. He also picked a Saturn nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Program in 2007 and two Teen Choice nominations for TV - Choice Chemistry (2006) and Choice TV Breakout Performance – Male (2005). On his character, he says, “He’s the kind of guy I would not tolerate in the real world. I don’t have any respect for people who treat other people like that…. I love playing someone I wouldn’t tolerate in real life. That’s not how I live, so it’s a release for me.”

“Fortunately and unfortunately, people don't see me as a character actor. They see me as a leading man or nothing, which makes it really hard to get work.” Josh Holloway

Although “Lost” has successfully launched him to celebrity status, Holloway did find little time to use his popularity to snap up other major roles. Because of the demands of his shooting schedule, he was forced to take himself out of consideration for roles in both “X-Men 3” and a Brad Pit Western. Fortunately, he had the time to star in a upcoming crime/drama film directed by Stewart Hendler called “Whisper” (2007) and branch out to the world of video games with “Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars” (2007), in which he portrayed the role of a Nod soldier named Ajay. In May 2007, he was approached by 20th Century Fox for a second time and was offered the role of Gambit in “X-Men 4.” He was the principal competitor for the same role in “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006), but left the running because of his hectic schedule on “Lost.”
