The latest (greatest?) in a long line of "what happens after the end of the world as we know it" flicks. If you liked Planet of the Apes, Mad Max, Omega Man, The Time Machine, Water World etc., you'll like this one too. |

 | The postman is a movie that is based off of a classic book by the same title. This movie deserves 5 stars because it covers a lot of ground that other EOW movies do not! It is realistic in premise, void of magic, and uplifting in the end. It is a must see if you like Costner, EOW movies, or anything of action and adventure, fighting, and freedom.
Making an escape, the drifter, known to some as "Shakespeare," stumbles across an abandoned U.S. Postal Service jeep and dons the dead postal-worker's uniform. With a scheme simply to get food, he sets out to deliver 15-year-old mail, proclaiming himself The Postman, and discovers that residents accept his lies about a restored United States government because they desperately need something to believe in. This hope leads to the thought that perhaps the United States of America could indeed be restored, so an unusually inspired young man, Ford (Laren Tate) is deputized with the "Neither snow, nor rain..." oath to become the country's second Postman. At the town of Pineview, the attractive Abby (Olivia Williams), who has an impotent husband, asks The Postman to impregnate her. After Abby's husband is killed during a raid by Bethlehem, she is taken prisoner but injures Bethlehem and makes an escape. Pregnant, she spends the winter nursing the wounded Postman in a snowbound cabin.
When spring comes, they emerge to discover that Ford has organized an entire squad of mail deliverers who regard The Postman as a mythical hero. The Postman reluctantly accepts his messianic role in the rebirth of the country, even as it becomes clear that the rebel force must ultimately battle and defeat the Holnist army in order to regain the American Dream. |

 | Yes, I'm a Kevin fan and yes, I think this is an exceptional movie, and it is refreshing to see so many other fans saying so.
The media tend to build people up in order to knock them down, and like David Bowie, Kevin has incurred their wrath entirely because of the extent of his genius. His performances in JFK and Dances were as good as it gets, and to me, he lends the same quality to his performance in The Postman. If anything, it is understated, and that may have been part of the problem for the pre-biased critics, who descended like pack animals when the movie came out.
I totally agree that in the wake of 911 the movie has infinitely more significance, and now that patriotism isn't such a dirty word, except in Trendy Lefty circles, this is a movie that is worth seeing or re-visiting for any viewers who were wavering because of the infantile Bashing campaign that dogged its release and distribution.
The guy's brilliant, deal with it.

 | It surprises me how many people loathe this movie. I happened to really like it because it is a movie of hope, rather than dispair. The main plot is the re-establishment of mail service after it has stopped, due to a disaster that has left the country split into small communities with no communication between them. With so much other media available these days, especially the internet, our mail hasn't become as important to us as it once was. Getting a letter used to be a huge thrill; now all the mailman brings are advertistments and bills. Everyone uses e-mail now; even grandmothers! Still, I suspect that if we lost our mail delivery, we would feel the pinch. A healthy mail delivery system is truly the lifeblood of a strong country. Does that sound corny? This movie does get a bit corny, syrupy, sappy and silly at times. I happen to like this sentimental corny stuff and if you do too, you'll love the movie. This movie rates high in my book just for the message it delivers. Okay, so maybe it doesn't "deliver" it the best way possible. This is escapism and fantasy. If you analyse it too closely you will find a lot of flaws. Just sit back and relax and watch and enjoy the movie. Whenever a movie is so roundly criticized, it is worth a look just to see if you agree or not. Unfortunately, sometimes you will say to yourself "This was as bad as they said". Other times you may be pleasantly surprised. This one may surprise you and it may not. Maybe with a few minor changes this could have been a much better movie, but I loved it anyway. Maybe it helped that I didn't recognize Tom Petty. By the way, I liked Waterworld too, but it wasn't nearly as good as this movie. Am no big Costner fan; sometimes he just seems very blah without much emotion or appeal. It's hard to identify with him. |

 | When one of my friends discovered this film in the 5$ Wal-Mart bin I presumed it probably deserved to be there. However, I was mistaken, as this is actually a nice film.
The plot is based on the same post-apocalypse films that many are based around; however, this film is a bit different. For example, Will Patton (now remembered for Remember the Titans) plays a ruthless leader of a "feudal" style tribe or gang if you will. He takes money from the poor; in return he promises not to hurt them, too badly at least.
However, as most ruthless groups do, this one had some dissenters, mainly Kevin Costner's character. Initially starting as a forced member of the gang, Costner's character assumes a role as a postman and begins to give new life to the terrorized communities. The question is though will he succeed?
Now, this film is clearly long enough (runtime just under 3 hours) to be filled with all kinds of excitement, and it is. Now, there are not any complicated subplots really, but the development of the story takes some time. I do not know what really touches one about this film though. Maybe it is the theme of dogged determination, hope in hard times, or just the archetypal hero, a.k.a. the Postman.
Either way, I am sure that most will enjoy this film, if you can just squeak through the long parts. Just remember, this movie is basic, with it's character we love to hate and then the other that we love to love, but it's that simplicity that draws and traps attentions with, deservedly. |
