SummaryNot as good as the book!
Content
If you enjoyed Robert Crais's novel by the same name and are expecting a more or less faithful adaptation of the book, you may want to skip this DVD. While it is a somewhat entertaining film, its plot bears only marginal resemblance to the book's plot.

The three kids do not rob a convenience store and kill the owner. The hostages' home is not one of many homes in a gated community, but stands alone as a fortress at the top of a mountain. In the novel, Mars is a vacant, overweight, hulking psychopath. In the DVD, Mars is a vacant, skinny psychopath. Many of the character's names are different from those in the book. None of the director's changes are an improvement on Robert Crais's novel.

And the acting, for the most part, is stilted at best and down-right amateurish at worst. The real star of this film is the hostages' house, an incredibly ugly fortress-like "mansion" complete with steel bars. In other words, nothing like the house described in the book. Oh well, at least it has the security system and hidden passageways described in the book.

SummaryBig screenplay plot problems
Content
1. Audience doesn't care whether Talley's wife and daughter live or die. The wife doesn't love him much and the annoying daughter is a loser. Audience likes Walter Martin's kids much better.
2. Three thugs are just too young and not inspiring fear. Even the silly stupid Mars was ludicrous as a madman. He just looked like a geek playing a mad man.
3. Willis negotiating for money makes no sense as a ploy, and these black-booted thugs make no sense as to the lengths they'll go.
It was not boring, I'll give it that. There was action. But I really wasn't inspired to give a damn whether Talley's wife lived or died in the end. I almost hoped they died and he'd go off on his own and start a Hostage trilogy.
Just a ridiculous uninspiring premise.

SummaryUnexpected Turns
Content
This is the usual exciting, riveting, visually-stunning-effects- and-well-acted-film-with-a-good-plot-and-story that I expect from Bruce Willis. So it was a pleasure just to sit back and let the movie roll! It is worth watching a couple more times and then giving it to friends who not only appreciate War and Peace but also love fast-paced action films
