 | First of all it's a mock documentary of a beauty pageant in a small town.
It stars the ever so wonderfully- b!tchy Kristie Alley (who does an excellent job in this movie as the rich, ex-beauty queen mom trying to help her daughter (denis Richards) win the pageant).
You have Kristie's character's husband, who is an owner/manager of a furniture store and is always shown drinking (even at the actual beauty pageant in the school, he's got his liquor).
You have denis Richards who plays the "so perfect- I make you- wanna puke- wanna be beauty queen " who, while she appears perfect...is infact a nutty b!tch- who gets a peice of the pie in the sky...
You have sugary sweet Kirsten Dunst as the rival to Denis who works at a mourge (however it's spelled) doing the make up for dead people while she tap dances practicing for her routine.
You have her HILARIOUS mom and her friend (Kirsten, mom , & mom's friend live in trailor park. Her mom runs a beauty salon in her trailor and is always drinking and during an incident she's actually blown outa the house with a beer can stuck to her hand....
The fellow wanna be beauty pageant queens are:
A dog obsessed girl, emphasize on the word obsessed... the slutty "not all there" cheerleader, the red headed american girl adopted and favored by her oriental parents (her oriental sister HATES her and all the attention she gets), there's the eccentric drama student, there's the sugary sweet gal who dresses up like tinkerbell and does sign language for her routine (her relative is deaf, so her goal in life is to spread love through sign language), then there's Brittney Murphy! her character has the extreme giggles and sillies (also a ditz), it's pretty infectious because you start laughing with her.
You have your eccentric town folk trying to judge for the pageant: The creepy judge (he's hilarious), The hilljack Father and Son team (Will Sasso is the fat retarded son- he's hilarious also), then you got the shy/quiet book worm who you can tell is scared by all the confidence the girls show.
I mean the characters are hilarious...this movie combines murder and comedy into one. My mom and I just laughed, laughed, laughed...it was good all the way through. The ending is a hoot, I'm not going to give it away for those who haven't seen it...but it's funny. I heart this movie... |

 | This movie is truly crap. I sat through it once when it first came out, then again when my sister told me to watch it. I'm from minnesota, actually near Pine City. This is a scandinavian area and they portrayed miss Pine City as an asian girl. That's the only part of the movie I laughed at, not with. Do your research a litt.e Minnesota is not a trailer park trash state, and it seemed to me the people acted more like people of some parts of west virginia....I have a sense of humor, but wow. This is a dumb movie. |

 | Wow this movie is absolutely pointless. Kirsite Alley who's as goofy as they come plays a mom wanting to kill off beauty pagent stars so her daughter can win. Denise Richards was flat as Rebecca, Kirsten Dunst is a total waste here, and that girl who played Leslie was annoying. Ellen Burnstyn played a good character as did Brittany Murphy who should have had a bigger role. Don't watch this or you'll drop to the floor in anger! |

 | Although this movie is a lot more realistic, and bitchier at the same time. Kirsten Dunst's & Denise Richards' would be eye gouging and hair pulling is so good, it's funny. The 'documentary-style' of the movie is quite inventive, although it does slip back into normal movie mode sometimes.
What makes Miss Congeniality better than this, is that Miss Congeniality lasts longer, while the whole pageant of this doesn't last long in the movie, and the rest of it is made up of what happened before & after.
The cast are excellent, and Brittany Murphy has a worst laugh than Sandra Bullock does in Miss Congeniality, it's so funny! She doesn't appear on screen for long though!
Overall, this is a good, although slightly tedious movie, with one of the most original covers around! |

 | I had heard all sorts of things, both positive and negative, about Drop Dead Gorgeous. Given that, I didn't quite know what to expect from it, as it turned out, it's a solid black comedy. It will surely leave you to wonder whether it's a case of art imatating life a bit too much.
The Sarah Rose Princess America Pageant in small town Minnesota that brings out the best in everyone. It's an event that any young girl would just die to be a part of. And that is exactly what the contestants in Mount Rose are doing. Ever since the vivacious but vicious former beauty queen, Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley), has been pushing her charm-challenged daughter, Rebecca (Denise Richards) to win at all costs, the competition has been dropping like flies. Between exploding tractors and deadly hunting accidents, it's a wonder the top challenger, poor Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) has the courage to perservere. But after Amber's mother, (Ellen Barkin) is injured in a suspicious trailer-park beauty shop bombing, Amber is determined to fight to the finish -and the battle between the good and the bad - is about to get a whole lot scarier.
Director Michael Patrick Jann had the film shot like a "mock"-u-mentary ala Blair Witch. This allows for him to take the characters to some interesting places. So much so, at times you don't know if the film is being "serious" as it makes you laugh. As a former Junior Miss runner up, I'm sure writer Lona Williams walked a very thin line here between what really happens at events like this, and stuff she added for flair. Some things that happen throughout the course of the film are pretty harrowing, yet I still found myself laughing. The cast is right on target here and its fun to see Alley and Barkin go at each other. The film is by no means perfect, mind you, as it does have minor pacing issues but it is fun.
The DVD extras are lacking anything substantial about the making of the movie. Aside from the usual theatrical trailer, and some static filmographies for cast and crew, the only thing you can really sink your teeth into is the DVD-ROM material, which includes "Script to Screen". Viewers can choose to watch the movie in either widesceen or fullscreen formats.
Drop Dead Gorgeous is more fun than I expected it to be. It's worth a peek. ***1/2 stars for the total package.
