SummaryHistory Lesson
Content
This movie portrays a hard charging (and complex)entrepreneur who helped write American History during a very turbulent time for this country. I feel it's important for Americans to understand what helped to get us to where we are today as a country. Many of the elements that I loved about Seabiscuit (and made Seabiscuit a great movie (5 Stars in my book)are present in this movie.

Don't miss it!!

SummaryThe Slow-viator
Content
I felt like I had been robbed of 3 hours of my life. Like the spruce goose this movie barely manages to take off only to go back down shortly after. I watched this film with a group of friends, none of whom are action junkies, and by the time it was over I was the only one still awake to turn the DVD player off. Avoid this movie unless you want a lengthy biography of Howard Huges, but I personally enjoyed the actual biography more

SummaryIt's a pretty boring movie. It's a pretty boring movie. It's a pretty bor . . .
Content
I watched this movie because I saw how many awards it won from the Academy and the Golden Globes. While there were a few bright spots, it was much, much, MUCH longer than it should have been. Don't dismiss me as the kind of movie watcher that can't stand a three-hour movie. Some of my favorite movies are the historical epics such as the Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, etc. However, this biopic just didn't have the steam to take me through three hours. The best part of the movie was the acting. DiCaprio did a fine job, and I think they picked the right people for Katherine Hepburn (Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (Beckinsale, who isn't hard on the eyes, might I add). I just wish it weren't so long.

SummaryBoring and overrated
Content
I rented this because i like old hollywood and i heard it was good boy was i wrong. This movie is well made and directed well it should be it sure cost a lot to make but it is rather dull. I kept thinking as i watch this movie that the actors playing the real life people do not look or act like the person they are playing. Some of the story is wrong like that Ava Gardner stuck by him after he cheated on her that was wrong Ava never did that she never put up with any crap her men did to her. Actually i am not a Leo fan but he was good in it considering he looks to much like a sissy to play Howard Hughes. The Howard Hughes story is very interesting but you be better of watching a good documantary which this 2 cd set comes with. One more thing i am sick and tired of Miramax promoting boring movies to death for oscar consideration. All of these movies are forgetable the only one that people like and remeber today is Pulp Fiction. Thankfully the Oscars came to there senses and this movie did not win best picture or director, just becasue scoresse is a great director that has not won before that does not mean he deserves it for this movie which is probably one of his worst. And by the way Millon Dollar baby deserved to win best picture it is very moveing and well acted and made and stays with you long after you seen it i cant say that to this movie.

SummaryFlying High with Howard Hughes
Content
In The Aviator, Leonardo DiCaprio portrays the young Howard Hughes, one of America's first billionaires. Hughes inherited a huge fortune from his family's tool and dye company and decided to use the money to push the world forward. He was a prominent director, who pushed the limits of violence and promiscuity in film, and he was a constant innovator of aviation technologies. As the owner of TWA, he took on corrupt senators to prevent Pan-Am from having a sole monopoly on transatlantic flights. Yet, despite these accomplishments, Hughes had undiagnosed Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder that led him to fall into madness as he always feared that germs and sickness loomed around every corner.

In the movie, DiCaprio portrays Hughes perfectly since he is able to play the cocky, Hollywood playboy that Hughes was, and at the same time, he conveys to the audience that Hughes is not stable and falling deeper into insanity. One actor that really annoyed me though was Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Kate Hepburn. Her voice is whiny, her accent pierces the ears, and it makes Hepburn seem like an annoying and overzealous women.

One place where the DVD adds to the movie is the special features which include a short documentary about OCD and its effects. In this feature, they even interview some real life patients to show that the portrayal of Hughes's disease was not too farfetched. Another aspect that I enjoyed was the History Channel documentary on Hughes that adds some new historical information to the film.

All together, I think this is one of the better movies that have come out in a long time, and despite the length of the movie (170 Minutes), I found the plot intriguing enough that time seemed to fly away.
