 | Unlike the black and white Universal monster flick of the same name and basic story line, this MUMMY is not a horror film rather an adventure of the RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK genre. And, the result is a pleasant surprise offering a fun screenplay, great special effects, over the top acting and a wonderful musical score by Jerry Goldsmith.
Director/Screenwriter Stephen Sommers approached the work with confidence and moves the 2-hour story along at breakneck speed like a plague of locusts never slowing down for plot exposition. The sheer speed also allows plot holes to fly by you undetected. Although the effects and approach have changed drastically, there are elements of THE MUMMY that would fit in the 50s classic. A couple of the characterizations, most notably Beni and the brother Jonathan are of the over-the-top variety so often used in those chillers. Even our hero has little to no character development, just an adventurer throughout. But, where the classic is now static due to technological limitations, this CGI creature can accomplish great stuff, previously unimaginable. Sometimes the visuals are frighteningly uncomfortable, like when scarab bugs are seen crawling underneath layers of skin. My bandages are off to the computer artists.
Brendan Fraser is our hero Rick O'Connell and carries enough charisma to carry over into two other movies. Somehow, he is able to pull off even the most ridiculous dialogue. And his love-interest, Rachel Weisz is of the beautiful, bright British department, similar to Helena Bonham Carter. All of this is well supported by the musical maestro Jerry Goldsmith who adds heroic textures throughout the entire film. THE MUMMY has already seen 2 releases on DVD, The first has a picture of the heroes with the mummy's face sculpted out of sand. The Second, more advanced release was entitled THE ULTIMATE EDITION and features pyramids on the cover. This is the better of the two as it has two discs of material but if you are not into the extras, save yourself a couple bucks by going for the first release. Both have a great audio transfer, and will challenge your Surround Sound System. The video also looks great on bothe releases.
I want my mummy!

 | This is a good adventure movie, meant to emulate the old movie serials. It's a fun ride that always has something happening, lots of physical action broken up with little bits of dialogue and plotting. It's exactly what it sets out to be.
The special effects are very cool, particularly the mummy in his various stages of undeath. The characters, while simple, are all well-drawn and engaging. Even the mummy's stooge has a lot of personality and, aided by a nice performance, is never as flat as he could've easily been. And the story is interesting without getting too complicated and ruining the pacing with endless scenes of exposition.
I watch this film every couple of months, and I can say I enjoy it every time. The sequel is pretty good too. If you like monsters, magic, and a lot of larger than life action, this is a film I'd highly recommend. |

 | This would have to be one of my favourite Horror movies. It stars Brendan Fraser in a role reminiscent of Harrison Ford in the Indian Jones Movies but this movie is set in Egypt where an Ancient Mummy has returned to life and must be distroyed. Brendan is joined in his hunt by the beautiful Rachel Weisz with a very sexy English accent. I only wish the my local Librarian looked as good as her. A thrilling chase, a few unexpecte twists and the good guys put up one hell of a fight? Movie entertainment at it's best!!! |
