 | Loosely based on a series of novels authored by John Shirley, The Specialist, is a cheeky actioner that is pretty much by the numbers, when all is said and done. Of course, it doesn't help that the film stars have absolutely no chemistry with one another...
As a child, May Munro (Sharon Stone) watched in horror as her family was brutally murdered in a contract hit by three Cuban gangsters, led by the reptilian Tomas Leon (Eric Roberts). Now an adult, she is hell-bent on avenging her parents' death. She tries to hire Ray Quick (Sylvester Stallone), a bomb specialist with a noble heart and "a past" to do the job. This leads to complications as Quick must confront his ex-CIA partner, the malicious Ned Trent, (James Woods) who now works for the Leon family. But as Quick and Munro work together to settle their respective scores, things get even more complicated.
Director Luis Llosa knows how to make things explode but that about it. The nuanced skills as an actress that Stone displayed for Basic Instict, just a few years before, is no where to be found. Even for a guilty pleasure or so bad its good film to work chemistry is the key. Stone and Stallone go from being wooden to over the top with no in between. Not a good combo folks. The script by Alexandra Seros pushes all of your typical action film beats. The only saving grace for me is Woods, eating up the scenery, he at least has some umph and spark.
Save for some static production notes and the theatrical trailer, the DVD is void of bonus features. That may have been a wise move.
See The Specialist only if you are a James Woods fan. |

 | After ROCKY and COPLAND, this is Stallone's best film. Eric Roberts and james woods steal this film with brilliant performances, and rod steiger is an added bonus. There has never been a more interesting concept for a big hollywood action film. A genius who uses explosives to do his work, instead of a gun. NO, BLOWN AWAY is not a similar film, though i highly reccomend it as well. MISS THIS AND YOU MISS SOME TRULY GREAT ACTING! Sly is solid too. |

 | I cannot believe the bad reviews for this movie! I love it! Explosives expert Ray helps a mysterious young woman avenge her parents death. They talk on the phone every night & he watches her while taking out the bad guys. Sharon Stone is extremely sexy & she's looking her very best here. Stallone is just hot & he looks great. The setting is just gorgeous & is one of the reasons I love the film. It takes place in colorful, sunny, hot Miami Beach. The chemistry between the two of them is just hot & the shower sex scene was steamy as hell! Stallone is confident, masculine & convincing in his role as an explosives expert. James Woods was great to watch. He's a terrific actor! Eric Roberts is always convincing as the bad guy. The story line may not be all that but the movie itself is sexy, action packed & overall entertaining with great actors who play their parts well. I enjoyed it! |

 | Yet another bad choice by Sly Stallone. He plays Ray Quick, a former CIA "specialist" (an explosions expert) who's hired by May (Sharon Stone) to avenge her family's death years ago.
May's family was killed by a drug lord's son played by Eric Roberts (who looks like a lounge singer impersonating Bon Jovi) and she wants revenge on him and his whole family. Quick is all for helping her, especially when he finds out his former corrupt partner James Woods is helping the drug kingpins out.
Obviously a cash-in on Stone's fame after 'Basic Instinct', the movie randomly thows in a shower sex scene between the two leads that's kind of goofy and ridiculous. The story is mediocre, the acting so-so and only James Woods provides some of the highlights (as he usually does). Not worth your time or money. |
