On the music front, the petite singer has released several singles
on the Internet, including “I Love U,” “Stripper
Friends” and “Paralyze.” The album “Tila
Tequila: I Have Tourettes” is now in production.
Tila, who used her website “Tila's Hot Spot” to promote herself, has emerged as one of the most sought-after models on the Internet. The format of her site was later renewed and includes a premium membership segment that includes videos, picture galleries, chat sessions and a blog. Tila also created Tilafashion.com, which features her line of clothing for women and men, and “Tila Zone,” a website featuring content to use on MySpace and other social networking sites.
Tila was named MySpace’s “Most Popular Person of 2006.” She was also given the titles of “Miss MySpace” and “Queen of MySpace.” Tila was voted one of Maxim magazine's “Hot 100 of 2008” and was once named one of Stuff's “100 Sexiest Women” online.
“Hooking Up with Tila Tequila: A Guide to Love, Fame, Happiness, Success, and Being the Life of the Party,” a self-help book by Tila Tequila, was released on December 2, 2008.
Childhood and Family:
Thien Thanh Thi Nguyen, who would later be popular as Tila Tequila, was born on October 24, 1981, in Singapore, to Vietnamese immigrant parents. Her parents moved to Singapore just before she was born and stayed there for a few years. When Tila was one, her family relocated to Houston, Texas, and settled in a gated community led by a rigid Buddhist temple. Along with her older sister and brother, Tila was raised in this strict environment until she turned eight when her family decided to leave the community.
With her newfound freedom, Tila emerged as a tomboy in middle school and soon became a terror. She joined gangs, became involved in fights and started recreational drug use. She even spent time in juvenile detention centers. She skipped classes and experimented with drugs and her sexuality. At age 16, Tila went to New York City and was discovered by a scout for Playboy magazine two years later. Her flourishing modeling career began thereafter.
Cyber Girl of the Month
After moving to New York City, Tila Tequila dealt ecstasy and spent much of her time in clubs. When she ran out of money, the troubled youth used a fake ID to get a job as a waitress at a strip club. The 18-year-old girl was spotted by a “Playboy” scout at a mall and received the chance to model for the magazine. Reluctant at first, she eventually posed for “Playboy” at age 19.
With the hope of finding more opportunities, Tila headed to Hollywood and by April 2002, had been named “Playboy's Cyber Girl of the Week.” Her popularity grew even further when she was featured as the magazine's “Cyber Girl of the Month,” making her the first Asian model to earn the title. She went on to do a few more pictorials for the magazine and has since appeared in many magazines like “Stuff,” “Maxim,” “Time,” “Rolling Stone” and “Penthouse.”
Tila boosted her fame with plenty of work from car magazines like “Import Tuner” and “Performance Auto and Sound” and with appearances in car shows, including Hot Import Nights. Thanks to her website, Tila's Hot Spot, she attracted attention of video game maker 3DO, who then used her appearance to help create a character for its Street Racing Syndicate game. Tila's growing career was furthered verified when she was recruited as the spokesmodel for Nintendo's portable video game system, the Game Boy Advance. With this high-profile contract, she successfully made the transformation to a recognized model.
In 2003, Tila broke into television when she appeared as a contestant on “Surviving Nugent,” a reality show broadcasted on VH1 where participants performed tasks and stunts for rock star Ted Nugent. Three years later, she became a host on the first season of “Pants-Off Dance-Off,” a dance show on the Fuse Network. Other TV shows she has appeared in include “The John Kerwin Show,” NBC's “Identity,” “The War at Home,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet.”
Tila's television career enjoyed significant growth when she headlined her own show on MTV called “A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila.” Debuting on October 9, 2007, the bisexual-themed reality dating show, which featured sixteen straight men and sixteen lesbian women who contended for the affections of Tila, was a big hit although it did ignite arguments between her and conservative Christians on the Internet. The final episode of “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila” premiered on July 8. 2008. Also in 2007, Tila made her big screen debut with a bit part on Dennis Dugan's comedy “I Know Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” which starred Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Jessica Biel.
Tila has also used her popularity as a model to break into music. She formed a group called Beyond Betty Jean for which she was a singer and songwriter. After the group disbanded, she sang lead vocals for the band Jealousy, which has launched singles on the Internet. The group also contributed to MySpace Records' inaugural compilation album, which was released through MySpace Records and Interscope. Tila also signed with the Will.I.Am music group, a record label under A&M Records. However, on February 27, 2007, she independently released her first single, “I Love U,” via iTunes. It was followed by the single “Stripper Friends” in October 2007 and the third single, “Paralyze,” in April 2008. The music video for “Paralyze” premiered on April 2, 2008, on Yahoo Music. “Sex,” a studio EP, was released on March 20, 2007.
Tila is currently working on her new album, “Tila Tequila: I Have Tourettes.” Along with “I Love U,” Stripper Friends” and “Paralyze,” the album will also include the well-received song “Hideaway,” which received a digital release in July 2008 through Tila's MySpace.
